A Brief History and Treatment Benefits

Smell has always been one of the most powerful and instinctual of the senses. It has guided our earliest ancestors in their choices of foods and medicinal herbs. This knowledge gradually grew over the centuries with the Egyptians temples burning gums and resins, the Romans used oils to massage and herbs in the home.

Aromatherapy was used integral part of part of medicine until 19th and 20th century saw the development of chemistry and synthetic drugs. It was a chemist Frenchman, Rene Gatefosse in 1937 who coined the phrase ‘Aromatherapy’. After burning his hand in the laboratory he plunged his hand into the nearest liquid, a bowl of lavender essential oil. The hand soon healed with speed and nearly no scarring. He soon researched the properties and found it was greater than anything on the current market.

This then was researched further by Dr. Valnet, a French WW2 surgeon, as medical supplies where short this proved to an effective alternative in many cases. Today thousands us it in effective ways to balance, calm and treat modern day stresses alongside medicine.
